I’ve finally received an update as to when the episode of Sci-Fi Science: Physics of the Impossible airs that includes my Earth exploding animation. The show actually premieres tonight at 10pm, but my episode, “How to Blow Up a Planet,” airs next Tuesday, December 8th at 10pm EST.
You can check the Science Channel website for local listings. So, if you get the Science Channel, go watch it!

Using the glare output node in Mental Ray yields some interesting results. I created bit this morning, while playing around with the Glare shader. It’s very simple, but when replacing the rendered image with just the glare, the result was boring, part neat.

Glare is neat.

Once again, I have completed work not originally intended for me. Traditionally, anything that Daniel gets involved with, I inevitably poke and prod, suggesting I can do this shot and that little CG bit better so I can slowly and carefully continue to push my name into reputable movies and spread my name around. The latest stunt involves another independent film, A Lonely Place For Dying (this time, featuring a more known actor, James Cromwell).

The beginning of the movie involves a couple shots of aerial bombing, to which I couldn’t help but to plead for Daniel to let me use Fume to create the bombs. So, off I went, taking some initial R&D work I did for the oft-mentioned, but almost-never blogged about, Threads of Destiny and applying it back to good old Earth (so, like, not zero-g and in space etc.) Along with some help with shader development toward the end, I was able to create some (hopefully) believable bombs from the sky. Additionally, I provided some fires to help provide some sense of pre-carnage.
